When you are expecting your first baby, most parents-to-be first start thinking about how they want to set up the nursery, baby proof the house, and get all the baby gear they need to get through those first few months. What many parents don’t think about is the need to prep your car, too. It is important to get the car ready for a new baby, and here are some of the ways you can do it.
Car Seat
This may seem obvious to some, but it is important to think about ahead of time. You can’t leave the hospital without a car seat, and you want to make sure you have one with a good rating. It is also a good idea to get a new one. Used car seats are not recommended.
Clean Out the Car
Before you get the car seat in there, you want to give the inside of the vehicle a good cleaning. Pick up loose items that could possibly get thrown around in an accident, and vacuüm the crumbs and dirt. You also want to clean out the trunk. Get rid of anything you don’t need. Remember, you are going to need room for a stroller and other baby gear that goes with you any time you bring the baby out in the car.
Seat Protectors
Since the car seat will strap into the car and remain there for several years, you want to protect the seats from the hard plastic edges. A seat protector underneath the car seat is a good way to keep the fabric looking new even after years of pressure from the safety seat, and the crumbs and spills that are sure to occur over the years.
Window Shades
A new baby doesn’t know how to move their face out of the sun when they are riding in a car, and you can’t get to them if you are driving. Put a shade up in their window to keep the sun out. It is a good idea to do this before the baby comes, so if your ride home from the hospital is on a sunny day, you are all set. If your car already has tinted back windows, you don’t need to worry about getting an extra shade.
Trunk Mat
It is a good idea to get a rubber floor mat for the trunk of your vehicle to protect the floor from the dirt and grime that comes off stroller wheels. There are several on the market designed to fit specific makes and models, so you can find the one that works for your vehicle. Adding a mat will keep the floor in better shape, and you can remove it to clean it out when it needs it.
